In the episode of The Working Dog Collective Pawdcast, I chat with Rebecca Gibson, owner of Flyaway Geese. Rebecca chats with me about her business, her dogs and her passion for the work that she loves to do.
Rebecca has created an amazing niche for herself in the world of working dogs, but training border collies to scatter geese in areas where their presence may pose a danger to either them or to humans. Rebecca has taken her experience and passion and turned it into a thriving career. Her mission is twofold:
1. To train her dogs provide services to businesses in her area that need help managing the geese (or other birds). In particular, Rebecca finds herself working on golf courses, airports and even a military installation. She and her team take the dogs to these places to teach the geese that it's not safe for them to be there and encourage them to live somewhere else. The dogs are trained to never hurt or take a bird. It's there job just to drive them off. After a while, the birds figure it out and move on. Her methods are approved by Fish and Wildlife and by PETA.
2. Rebecca also provides dogs to private citizens and businesses, with training. For people thinking about starting a Goose Dog Business, Rebecca should be their first phone call!
On a personal note, I love Rebecca's enthusiasm for her dogs. She loves the "light bulb" moments and still gets excited when a dog "gets it".
